Method 3 - Municipal GIS viewer
Each metro publishes a free property viewer that accepts a street address and returns the erf number. Cape Town: maps.capetown.gov.za. Johannesburg: gis.joburg.gov.za. Tshwane: maps.tshwane.gov.za. eThekwini: gis.durban.gov.za. For smaller councils, use Landlodz's property search which aggregates national data.
Method 4 - Deeds Office search
WindeedSearch, Lexis Convey or a conveyancer can pull the deed by address for around R75-R150.
Method 5 - Ask your conveyancer or estate agent
Estate agents on the mandate always know the erf. Conveyancers will have it on the transfer file.

Can I find an erf number with just a street address?+
Yes. All four metro GIS viewers accept a street address and return the erf number.
What about smallholdings without a street address?+
Smallholdings are usually farm portions, not erven. Use the farm name and portion number instead.
Is there a free national erf number lookup?+
No single national portal yet. The four large metro GIS viewers cover most urban erven for free. For any application, your assigned SACPLAN-registered planner confirms the erf number against the official municipal records.
